Round 3- 77th overall
The Patriots found a decent role player in Chase Winovich with the 77th overall pick. However, New England could land a bigger fish at this spot. While Winovich brings more versatility to the table than Crosby, the Patriots need raw production from the pass rush, and Crosby pounded quarterbacks for ten sacks and 31 pressures last season.
New England’s two leading sack artists from last year, Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy, aren’t with the team anymore. Even Dont’a Hightower, who tied Winovich for the fourth-most sacks on the team with 5.5 last year, opted-out. The Patriots desperately need pass rushers.
New Pick: Maxx Crosby, EDGE Eastern Michigan
Round 3- 87th overall
Turns out, the Patriots like Winovich. With their growing need for versatile linebackers and edge rushers, the Patriots decide to re-draft the Michigan product. This move means New England passes on Alabama’s Damien Harris, but running backs serve a highly replaceable and rotational role in the team’s offense. It’s not a critical loss.
New Pick: Chase Winovich, EDGE Michigan
