Taysom Hill, Quarterback
It’s not too often for the Saints to have their leading passer also be the team’s leading rusher in the same game. That very sequence of events occurred during last week’s game in Jacksonville. Hill ended the game completing eight of nine passes for 72 yards. He also rushed for 52 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. Absolutely impressive stuff from the third-year quarterback from BYU.
For Hill, his spot on the roster could more than likely be secured with another impressive performance against Arizona. JT Barrett hasn’t impressed on the field thus far at all, whether it be practice or the real game. Hill will most likely keep Barrett away from making the final 53-man roster, and take up the third string QB spot he currently sits in. Behind Tom Savage – who, to be fair, played surprisingly decent against Jacksonville – Hill continued to improve upon his game and learn from one of the greatest quarterbacks ever.
Being the second preseason game, head coach Sean Payton will be giving Hill an expanded playbook against the Cardinals. The true test for Hill lies in his ability to read coverages and adjust plays during pre-snap intervals. If he’s able to accomplish high grades in both, Hill will be a big reason the Saints may end up winning yet again. His position as potential heir to Brees would still be questioned, but more confidence would be injected into Who Dat Nation regarding their young QB.
