Natrell Jamerson, Defensive Back
Not only is the rookie defensive back competing for playing time on defense; the former Wisconsin Badger is also in the running for major reps at kick and punt returner. Like Williams, Jamerson was selected in the fifth round, and 2018 marks his first season in the league. Playing safety in college, Jamerson could be placed at the same position, or converted to cornerback for the Saints. Either way, he has double the reasons to be watched this Friday evening.
Jamerson, originally a wide receiver, comes in at 6’0” and 200 pounds. Drafted just before Kamrin Moore, another defensive back hailing from Boston College, Jamerson is competing to depth space. He’ll have his hand at kick/punt returner as well as both cornerback and safety (most likely) come Friday against the Cardinals. In other words, he has two different positions to vouch for in two different areas on the field, and he’s legitimately competing for depth spots at all four positions.
That’s why it’s important to keep an eye for Jamerson. His play in camp has been fairly quiet, and he’s been picking up some steam during practice these last couple weeks. With additions like Patrick Robinson and Kurt Coleman, it seems as though the personnel in the DB department is stacked. If these guys stay healthy, and Jamerson improves to an impactful level here soon, the Saints’ secondary will not be able to be messed with at all. Friday may be the start of just that; we’ll have to wait and see.
