New Orleans Saints: 5 Reasons Team Will Repeat In NFC South

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

2. Alvin Kamara

If Drew Brees doesn’t perform up to standard in 2018, which is unlikely, you can expect second-year running back and 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara to step up to the plate. Kamara, a 2017 third-round pick out of Tennessee, totaled 1,554 yards and 13 touchdowns last year on his way to the honor, the first for the New Orleans Saints since Rueben Mayes in 1986. It seems like Kamara will have an even bigger role for the Saints this year.

Veteran back Mark Ingram was suspended for the first four games of the season due to a substance abuse policy violation in early May. This led to the Saints signing veterans Terrance West and Shane Vereen to ease the blow of losing their 2017 leading rusher. Despite the team signing the veterans, you can still expect them to lean heavily on Kamara.

The former Volunteer was second on the team in both rushing and receiving yards last year and he will likely do much of the same in 2018. The Saints will feed their workhorse early and often in hopes that it will open up the passing game. Don’t expect there to be a sophomore slump for Kamara in 2018.
