New Orleans Saints Fans Should Get Excited About This Derek Carr Report

Derek Carr, Saints

Derek Carr’s first season with the New Orleans Saints did not go very well.

It’s not that Carr put up terrible numbers, because he didn’t. His stat line actually looked decent, as he threw for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 68.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 97.7.

However, the Saints went just 9-8 and missed the playoffs, and it seemed very clear that Carr was not elevating his receiving corps. He wasn’t making particularly big plays, either.

Of course, that wasn’t all Carr’s fault.

New Orleans didn’t have a great offensive line, and its running game was pretty poor. The team also lacked depth in its receiving corps behind Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, thanks much in part to yet more injuries to Michael Thomas.

So, perhaps Carr did alright based on what he had around him.

Still, given what the Saints are paying Carr (four years, $150 million), they probably expected more.

The good news is that Carr is apparently looking pretty good thus far this offseason.

Derek Carr Has a New Offensive Coordinator

New Orleans has brought in Klint Kubiak to run the offense, and it seems to be having a rather positive effect on Carr so far, per Ross Jackson of Locked On Saints.

Of course, it’s only organized team activities, and given that Carr is a seasoned veteran, he should be performing well in these workouts regardless of who is calling the plays.

But, given how uneventful and largely boring the 2023 campaign was for the Saints, this is at least a silver lining heading into next season.

The question is, did New Orleans do enough to support him with adequate talent over the last couple of months?

Well, due to tight financial constraints, the Saints weren’t able to do a whole lot in free agency. Their biggest move was signing edge rusher Chase Young, but in terms of adding offense for Carr, that didn’t really happen. They signed wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr., but totaled just 296 receiving yards in 2023.

Perhaps the biggest move for New Orleans was drafting offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga in the first round, which will help shore up what was a shaky offensive line last season.

We’ll see if Derek Carr can have a more successful campaign in Year 2 down in the Bayou.
