The Arizona Cardinals are preparing for a massive Wild Card matchup on Monday Night Football against the division rival Los Angeles Rams. Taking on Matthew Stafford and company on the road will be no easy task, but the Cardinals may be getting some reinforcements. It appears that superstar pass-rusher JJ Watt may be making a return to the field.

As many know, Watt went down earlier this season with serious shoulder and arm injuries. Making a return this quick was not expected, but is coming at a perfect time for the Cardinals.

Vance Joseph, the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator, provided a very optimistic update about Watt ahead of this week’s big game.

Talk about a huge lift for the Cardinals. They will need all the help they can get to slow down Stafford and the Rams’ offense. In fact, one of the ways to shut down their offense is by putting pressure on Stafford.

Arizona’s game plan should be very blitz heavy. Stafford has struggled mightily throughout his NFL career against pressure. When he’s playing playoff caliber teams, his record is not that good.

Watt ended up playing in just seven regular season games in his first season with the Cardinals. He racked up 16 total tackles to go along with one sack, one forced fumble, and two defended passes. However, he has not played in a long time and it would be unreasonable to expect him to come back and dominate the Rams.

Simply having him on the field would be a major lift for the Cardinals, even if he isn’t completely up to speed. The Rams would have to account each and every down for JJ Watt, which would open up opportunities for others. That is where the impact would truly be made.

Expect to hear more about Watt’s status for Monday night as the weekend moves on. This is great news for the Cardinals and should provide a lot of optimism for the fans.
