Create Pressure on Alex Smith
On the other side of the ball, the Giants need to vastly improve in rushing the passer. If you can make the opposing QB uncomfortable, it changes the whole game.
This is an area that Giants have been unable to achieve this year. Through seven weeks, the Giants have just 10 sacks on the year. That leaves them as the 30th ranked team in the NFL, when it comes to sacking the QB.
In Week 7 though, they were able to generate a decent amount of pressure. They sacked Matt Ryan three times, and created unwanted pressure for the majority of the contest.
Last year, Smith ranked as the sixth best QB under pressure. So the Giants will need to create pressure, while also playing good coverage downfield.
It is tougher now, as the Giants have become thinner at CB, trading Eli Apple to the New Orleans Saints earlier this week.
Smith is a somewhat mobile QB, meaning the Giants will need to contain him from running when he wants. He isn’t a Cam Newton or Michael Vick, but he can do damage with his legs.
To secure a victory in Week 8, the Giants will need to make things uncomfortable in the pocket for Alex Smith.
