Wayne Gallman, Running Back

Wayne Gallman is in his second season with the New York Giants. Gallman got a good amount of reps last season, especially during the latter part of the year. He would finish out last year with 476 yards on 111 carries (4.3 YPC) in his rookie season. The former Clemson product also had 34 receptions for 193 yards and a touchdown. He was easily the best running back on the Giants roster when it was all said and done last year.

This season is different though, as Gallman finds himself currently sitting as the number three RB on the depth chart. The Giants selected Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick out of Penn State in the 2018 NFL Draft. Barkley will without a doubt be the starter in Week 1, getting the majority of work on passing downs as well. New York also signed veteran running back, Jonathan Stewart during the offseason. This seemingly leaves Gallman in a very odd spot.

Gallman was impressive last week in the Giants 30-17 victory over the Lions. Gallman had five rushes for 26 yards and a touchdown. He also tacked on a receiving touchdown as well. This week Gallman should see himself either start the game or be the second guy to come in at running back. I expect the Giants to sit Barkley despite him returning to practice this week. You can never be too cautious, especially with leg injuries with running backs. Either way, Gallman should be in line for a good amount of reps.

It will be interesting to see if Gallman can carve himself out a role on the Giants offense this season. He possibly could force himself into a role, especially in the passing game. It will be tough for Giants not to use his versatility at least part of the time, even though Barkley is a more talented back. This week could be a nice week to get an idea of where Gallman stands currently on this roster.
