The New York Giants could move defensive lineman Leonard Williams ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline if the price is right, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.
The Giants are just 2-5 heading into their Week 8 matchup with the New York Jets, and the status of quarterback Daniel Jones is up in the air for the foreseeable future due to a neck injury.
New York sits in last place in the NFC East in spite of its win over the Washington Commanders last weekend, so it could ultimately sell off some pieces before the end of the month.
While Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll met with running back Saquon Barkley before Week 7 and told him that the team intends to hold on to him, Williams may not be safe.
Williams is in the final year of his deal with New York, and his production has fallen off over the past couple of seasons. Through seven games this year, he has logged just 20 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Jones says that sources think Big Blue would be open to moving the 29-year-old if the draft pick compensation is high enough.
The Giants initially acquired Williams in a midseason trade with the New York Jets back in 2019. He ended up enjoying the best year of his career during his first full season with the G-Men in 2020, racking up 57 tackles, 11.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Leonard Williams, who played his collegiate football at USC, was originally selected by the Jets with the sixth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
His tenure with the Jets largely mimicked his trajectory with the Giants. He started off strong, and then began to fade in his latter years with the club.
The Giants will battle the Jets this Sunday.
