Rumor has it that the New York Giants are prepared to move on from quarterback Daniel Jones, which come as a surprise based on the season Jones just had.
The problem for the Giants is that Jones still has three years remaining on the four-year, $160 million contract they handed him last spring, which has led to some to believe that New York may be forced to stick it out with Jones for at least one more season.
But Connor Hughes of SNY doesn’t think Big Blue has that mindset.
On Thursday morning, Hughes posted a Q&A he recently did with Giants fans, and one fan asked whether or not New York was looking for Jones’ replacement in this year’s NFL Draft.
Hughes didn’t pull any punches with his response.
“Yes they are. That’s obvious at this point,” Hughes said. “It’s understandable, too. It’s not that the Giants don’t believe Jones can play. He’s a player that, when surrounded with a good supporting cast, can take you into the playoffs. He won’t be the reason the Giants win a Super Bowl, but there is belief he can be the quarterback of a team that gets there. The problem with Jones is his injury history. The Giants can’t trust him anymore.”
There is no question Jones has shown he can produce. Let’s remember that he is just two years removed from leading the G-Men to a road playoff win over the Minnesota Vikings. That was what led to New York handing him that big contract to begin with.
However, Jones tore his ACL this past season and also dealt with a neck issue. Since entering the league in 2019, Jones has experienced a myriad of injury problems and has played just one full season, which came in 2022.
The Giants own the sixth pick in the NFL Draft next month, and it’s looking more and more like they will be taking a quarterback. That would effectively end the Daniel Jones era in the Big Apple.
