New York Giants: 3 Reasons Why Odell Beckham’s Contract Is a Bargain

USA TODAY Sports

Return on Investment

I don’t think fans think about how much a player makes for the franchise they play for, especially someone like Beckham. Teams make revenue off ticket sales, merchandise sales, concession sales, endorsements, etc. So in reality, a decent portion of a team’s revenue is coming straight from the players and how they perform.

In 2017, the New York Giants were valued at $3.3 billion dollars. In the Forbes’ list of most valuable franchises in the NFL, that put them as the third most valued franchise in the league. The only two teams ahead of them are the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. That’s a nice group to be included in.

So let’s break this down when it comes to OBJ. Beckham just received a contract where the Giants are investing $19 million dollars a year on him. I know he isn’t making all of the team’s revenue but to put things into perspective, his contract is just .006% of the total team’s revenue. That’s not even half of one percent of the total revenue. The Giants are able to land TV deals and endorsements in large part because of having a player like OBJ. Beckham is making plenty of money for the Giants with his energetic personality and high-level of play on the field.

According to NFLShop.com, Beckham has the 14th highest-selling jersey in the NFL currently. This ranks him as the second WR in the NFL (only behind Antonio Brown who is 12th) in jersey sales. That’s pretty impressive when you see that 10 of the top 15 players in jersey sales are QBs. This shows the influence Beckham has off the field. It also makes you wonder how much money teams are pulling in from jersey sales alone.
