Giants’ Tommy DeVito Speaks Out On Earning Starting Job

It seems doubtful that anyone had Tommy DeVito starting at quarterback for the New York Giants on their bingo card this season, but, nevertheless, here we are.

DeVito stepped in as the Giants’ signal-caller after injuries to both Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor back in a Week 8 loss to the New York Jets, but when that occurred, it didn’t appear very likely that DeVito would keep his job very long. After all, DeVito went just 2-for-7 with negative-1 yard and did not throw the ball the entire second half of that game.

However, since then, DeVito has not only kept the starting job, but he has thrived, winning back-to-back games and throwing four touchdowns and no interceptions over the last couple of weeks.

Now that Taylor is healthy, some wondered if DeVito would ultimately return to a reserve role, but New York has decided to stick with the undrafted rookie.

DeVito wasn’t surprised to hear of the news.

“I wasn’t surprised but, at the same time, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” DeVito said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “I was told during the week, the bye week, that there was a decision that was going to be made and as soon as it was made that I would be made aware, and I was. I’m happy about it but at the same time, it’s still a job. You still have to go out and perform and do everything. It’s not like you’re at the top now, which is completely far from but just going to try to go out but just going to go out and try to get better every day and try to earn the respect of my teammates and my coaches and try to do that every play.”

In five appearances and three starts overall this season, DeVito has thrown for 697 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 62.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 92.4. He has also carried the ball 21 times for 83 yards and a score.

Whether or not the Giants actually view Tommy DeVito as a potential long-term solution remains to be seen, but it certainly makes sense to start a 25-year-old over the 34-year-old Taylor who has been a backup for the vast majority of his NFL career.

New York is 4-8 and will take on the Green Bay Packers next Monday.
