New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is currently going through one of the most difficult stretches of his life.
The youngster was pressed into unexpected starting duty back in Week 1 when prized offseason acquisition Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive series of the year. Wilson was able to guide New York to a surprising upset win over the Buffalo Bills that night, but since then, Wilson’s season has been nothing short of disastrous.
Wilson was so horrendous that he was benched in favor of Tim Boyle last week, who was then subsequently subbed out for Trevor Siemian during the middle of the Jets’ listless loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
Now, New York is re-inserting Wilson into the starting lineup, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett feels that the third-year signal-caller is ready for the challenge.
“He’s been great,” Hackett said, via SNY. “The guy’s been battle-tested, he really has. From being out on the field to all of the things he’s had to deal with. I respect him so much for being able to keep his head down, continually learn and continually grow.”
While Wilson’s on-field performance has been another story, there is no doubt that he has handled himself well this season in the face of extreme adversity.
In 10 games and nine starts this year, Wilson has thrown for 1,944 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing just 59.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 73.8.
The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at BYU, was selected by the Jets with the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Zach Wilson has gone just 11-20 as a starter over the course of his first three seasons, accruing 21 touchdown passes and 25 picks.
New York is just 4-8 and has lost five games in a row. It will take on the Houston Texans this Sunday.
