Following the New York Jets’ ugly Week 3 loss to the New England Patriots, legendary Jets quarterback Joe Namath had some harsh words for Zach Wilson, saying that the the youngster’s performance was “awful” and “disgusting.”

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson fired back at Namath during an appearance on ESPN New York’s Bart & Hahn Show on Tuesday.

“We love Joe…but I hope we find a way to use that as ammunition. And one day, that Joe Namath can admit that he was wrong,” said the wide out.

Garrett Wilson did not dismiss Namath’s right to an opinion, but he hopes that his quarterback can prove Namath wrong in the long run.

“Hopefully we can make him eat his words,” he added. “That’s what it comes down to and he has the right to have an opinion. I got people that say that about me, I am sure, and that is the reality of the game we play, people are going to have opinions. Like I have said we love Joe Namath and we love Zach too. We are confident in Zach.”

Zach Wilson went just 18-for-36 with 157 yards and seven three-and-outs during New York’s 15-10 loss this past Sunday.

The 24-year-old was unexpectedly pressed into starting duty in Week 1 when Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the first offensive series of the game. He proceeded to lead the Jets to a surprising win over the Buffalo Bills that night, but he has since lost his last two starts.

On the season overall, Zach Wilson has thrown for 467 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions while completing just 52.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 57.

The Jets will look to right the ship when they battle the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
