Jets’ Zach Wilson Is Actually On Historic Pace This Season

When you think of New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, “ball security” is probably not the first thing that comes to mind.

However, Wilson has actually done an incredible job taking care of the football in recent weeks.

Wilson has only thrown one interception in his last 170 passing attempts, making him one of just two signal-callers in the NFL this season to achieve that feat. The other is Houston Texans rookie C.J. Stroud, who has tossed one pick in his last 237 throws (h/t Paul Andrew Esden Jr. of The Score 1260).

That’s a pretty incredible stat for a guy who has been much-maligned by pretty much everyone this year.

On the season overall, Wilson has thrown for 1,337 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 58.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 74.3. Four of Wilson’s five picks came over the first two weeks of the season, with three of them coming in a Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at BYU, was selected by the Jets with the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He made 13 starts during his rookie campaign and totaled 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 55.6 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 69.7.

Then, last year, Wilson was limited to nine starts due to both injuries and a benching. During the time he was on the field, he threw for 1,688 yards, six touchdowns and seven picks, completing 54.5 percent of his passes and recording a passer rating of 72.8.

New York traded for Aaron Rodgers this past offseason, forcing Wilson into what seemed like a permanent backup role with the club. But, Rodgers ended up tearing his Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive series of Week 1, pressing Wilson back into action.

Gang Green has managed to go 4-3 in spite of Zach Wilson’s inconsistency under center, most recently defeating the New York Giants in an ugly 13-10 win last weekend.

The Jets will aim to win their fourth straight game when they battle the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night.
