Quarterbacks are typically favored to win the notable awards that are handed out by the NFL after the season concludes and the Comeback Player of the Year Award is no different. Despite a non-quarterback winning the award in four out of the last six seasons, quarterbacks have taken home the hardware nine out of the past 14 seasons.
It was reported on a seemingly calm Friday that Alex Smith was medically cleared by his surgical team to return to football in 2020. For those that don’t know, Smith suffered a fractured tibia and fibula back in 2018 with the Washington Football Team. If you’re someone that is easily squeamish, then watching the video of Smith’s horrific injury is not recommended.
Nonetheless, after over a year of rehabbing, Smith is attempting to make a valiant return to the NFL. In the event that Smith takes a snap during the 2020 season, there’s no doubt that Smith deserves the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Seeing what Smith had to endure to claw his way back to the gridiron, there’s no one more deserving of the award if he is able to suit up in the upcoming season. Besides Smith, there are also a few other quarterbacks that are set to return from season-ending injuries a season ago.
Taking that into account, what quarterbacks could be in line to win the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award for the 2020 season?
