NFL: 4 teams poised to take a step back during the 2020 season

Houston Texans

Heading into the 2019 season, some considered the Houston Texans as being one of the NFL’s dark-horse contenders to make a Super Bowl run. They defeated the Buffalo Bills in overtime in the Wild Card Round, but blew a 24-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

Instead of making moves to improve and bounce back from their disappointing playoff loss, the Texans traded their elite receiver, DeAndre Hopkins. Sure, Houston traded for Brandin Cooks and signed Randall Cobb…but good luck with that replacing Hopkins’ impact.

Having elite players is important since it sets the tone for a whole unit and that’s why they’re worth big contracts. The attention Hopkins commanded from defenses with the Texans and Deshaun Watson is going to have to adjust to not having that dynamic option to throw to anymore.

The Texans could end up competing for the AFC South division title in 2020, but there will be greater competition. The Tennessee Titans will be starting Ryan Tannehill from the jump and the Indianapolis Colts made intriguing offseason moves to improve, too.
