With the preseason underway for the Las Vegas Raiders, they have a few key questions to answer before the start of the regular season. One of the big issues for the Raiders is at the quarterback position.

Going into the 2024 campaign with a battle at the quarterback position isn’t an encouraging thing for the Raiders, as it is the most important position on the field. The Raiders had some solid teams with Derek Carr under center, but decided to move on from him prior to last season.

That might be a decision that Las Vegas regrets, as Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t impress at all last season, and is no longer on the team. Now, the Raiders have what seems to be an open battle for the starting quarterback spot between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew.

Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about the quarterback battle in Las Vegas and projected Minshew to win the starting job.

Here’s what they had to say about the battle after the first preseason game.

“While Saturday’s game certainly didn’t settle much, it showed the differences between the two quarterbacks. Minshew is more of a running threat, and his ability to push the ball down the field complements big-play pass-catchers like Bowers, Tre Tucker and Davante Adams.

The remainder of the preseason could change things. However, the prediction here is that Minshew’s skill set earns him the starting job for Week 1. If he struggles in the regular season, Las Vegas can always turn back to the “safe” starter, O’Connell.

Could Aidan O’Connell lose his starting job for the Raiders?

In the loss to the Minnesota Vikings, we got to see a good amount of Minshew and O’Connell. In the loss, Minshew totaled 117 passing yards on 6-for-12 passing to go along with a touchdown pass.

O’Connell also played well, as he totaled 76 passing yards on 7-for-9 passing. Considering it was just one game, no decisions on who will be the starting in Week 1 were likely made.

For the Raiders, Minshew might be the best option as of now. So far, we have seen Minshew be able to stretch the field a bit more and get some of the playmakers for the Raiders involved. While it might be a rebuilding season for Las Vegas, the team does have some talent at skill positions.

If the Raiders can get some good production from the quarterback position, they might be able to have a better season than some are expecting. With a few preseason games to go, expect to see both Minshew and O’Connell battling to win the job.
