The New York Giants are in a weird spot heading down the stretch of the 2023 season. On a two-game winning streak, they have a path to the postseason as they are only two games behind the seventh-place Green Bay Packers for the final Wild Card spot. At the same time, they are in the running for a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
At 4-8, New York is squarely in the mix for a top-three pick, which would net them an elite prospect. Their biggest needs happen to line up with the same positions the top prospects play, as a top-four pick would guarantee the Giants a highly-rated quarterback, wide receiver or offensive tackle.
Coincidentally, the Giants and Packers will face off on Monday Night Football to close out Week 14. That matchup will go a long way in determining the path that the Giants take. The one most of their fan base would like to see them go down is landing as high of a draft pick as possible to add an elite talent to the roster.
NFL News & Rumors: Daniel Jones, Joe Schoen, 2024 NFL Draft, New York Giants Updates
While the coaching staff and players on the roster aren’t going to lose games on purpose, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for the long-term outlook of the franchise to pile up losses and secure a top pick. Matt Miller of ESPN agrees with that contingent of the fan base, as he believes a reset at the quarterback position early in the draft is the best path forward.
“Sometimes the best thing you can do is admit you were wrong and move on. That’s what the Giants must do if they are in a position to draft Williams or Maye atop the quarterback board. But if they’re out of that top-two-quarterback range, let’s look at drafting a top wide receiver (Harrison?) and adding a quarterback on Day 2 to compete with Jones,” wrote Miller.
The Giants and Daniel Jones agreed to a four-year, $160 million contract right ahead of the franchise tag deadline this offseason. That enabled the Giants to place the tag on running back Saquon Barkley but put them in a tough spot at the quarterback position.

Jones didn’t come close to replicating the success he had in 2022 when he helped lead the team to a victory over the Minnesota Vikings during Super Wild Card Weekend. He has been thoroughly outplayed by veteran backup Tyrod Taylor and undrafted rookie free agent Tommy DeVito.
Now set to rehab a torn ACL for the next few months, no one can blame the Giants for looking to shake things up at quarterback this offseason. Jones’s contract has an out after the 2024 season, which management will think long and hard about pulling the trigger on.
