The San Francisco 49ers came within an overtime of winning it all. Unfortunately for Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and the rest of the unit, the 49ers ran into Patrick Mahomes in Las Vegas and it cost them in the end.
After licking their wounds, the team appears focused on the 2024 season, starting by taking care of Christian McCaffrey.
Speaking on “The Carton Show” on Wednesday, NFL analyst Plaxico Burress declared that it was time to win it all.
“This is the window for the San Francisco 49ers. It’s Super Bowl or bust.”
Teams are structured over time. Sometimes, teams are geared for success and the financials line up with the NFL Draft prospects. Most of the time, teams find themselves in building mode, trying to catch their moment at the peak of their power with all cylinders firing.
The 49ers, who have had their peaks and valleys over the years, are at risk of hitting their next valley quite soon, Burress indicated.
There are two big reasons for the team’s window shrinking. The 49ers have Christian McCaffrey, who is about to turn 28. In today’s NFL, no running back is guaranteed a healthy and productive year at that age.
Additionally, Nick Bosa serves as the second-highest-paid non-quarterback player in the NFL behind Justin Jefferson, per Spotrac. With Brock Purdy inching on his new deal soon, 2024 might be the last season in which the team remains in its current peak form.
Brock Purdy hands out Deja Vu in 49ers’ second Super Bowl run-in with Patrick Mahomes
Brock Purdy faced Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl and lost. However, he is not the first San Francisco 49ers quarterback to do so.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan went down the Super Bowl loss route in 2019. Garoppolo had faced health concerns for the entire duration of his career.
However, the 49ers quarterback managed to reach the Super Bowl in his first healthy starting season under Shanahan. According to Pro Football Reference, Garoppolo led the team to a 13-3 record, cashing in on what had been teased in 2017 when he went 5-0 in his debut half-season.
In a similar fashion, Purdy also teased an impressive half-season of work before an injury cut off his first true potential to hoist a Lombardi. Then, the following year, Purdy went 12-4 and took his team to a Super Bowl.
Both quarterbacks faced Patrick Mahomes in the Big Game and both teams let a lead slip away. Now, Purdy has a chance to reach uncharted territory between the two. With one more 10-win season, Purdy will be the first quarterback since Colin Kaepernick to turn in back-to-back double-digit-winning seasons.
Will Brock Purdy deliver for the San Francisco 49ers? We’ll have to wait and see, but the talent is certainly there.
