NFL Analyst Thinks New York Giants Should Trade For Baker Mayfield

The New York Giants are under new management this offseason with Joe Schoen taking over as general manager from Dave Gettleman. Schoen is inheriting a roster that is a bit of a mess and in need of an overhaul.

He has begun that process, slashing salary and upgrading the offensive line with whatever money he has to spend in free agency. But, the biggest question mark looming over the franchise is what will they do at the quarterback position.

Right now, they have Daniel Jones entrenched as the starter. Giving new head coach Brian Daboll and his staff at least one offseason to work with Jones makes a lot of sense given the success he had with Josh Allen, a quarterback with some similarities in skill set.

The team brought in veteran Tyrod Taylor, and as much as some people would like to see him push Jones for the starting spot, he is likely going to be the backup quarterback. He should be ready to play, however, as Jones has suffered injuries every season of his career.

While New York seems content with their current quarterback situation, one name to keep an eye on is Baker Mayfield. During a recent episode of UNDISPUTED, Skip Bayless suggested that Mayfield should be targeted by the Giants.

Mayfield has certainly had more success than Jones throughout his career as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Mayfield is supremely confident and the run he led the Cleveland Browns on during the 2020 season following Odell Beckham Jr.’s injury was an impressive one.

He is certainly available after the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson, but it is hard to imagine the Giants being where he lands. They just gave Taylor a sizable deal to be the backup and for a rebuilding team, trading away draft picks is not a good idea.

Not only would New York have to trade picks for him, but they would also then be on the hook to pay him as his rookie deal expires at the end of this season. It is a similar predicament that the team is going to be heading into with Jones soon.

Unless the new regime loves Mayfield and envisions him as the long-term answer at the position, it is hard to imagine the Giants making a move for him. One year with Jones and then jumping back into the rookie class in 2023, when there are supposed to be some great quarterback prospects available, is the more likely scenario to unfold for New York.
