The Los Angeles Rams failed to build off their loss to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. Last season, they finished with just a 9-7 record and ultimately resulted in missing the playoffs altogether, resulting plenty of focus to be placed on the play of Jared Goff.

There wasn’t a single quarterback in the NFL that threw more pass attempts (626) than Goff in 2019. As a result, he threw for 4,638 yards but the issue was that he racked up just 22 touchdowns while totaling 16 interceptions.

According to Mike Sando of The Athletic, an NFL secondary coach called Goff a ‘system guy’ and that he can’t succeed if it’s ‘not right there for him.’

“It’s almost like a system guy and if it’s not right there for him, he can’t make sh** out of nothing and that is what the really good ones do,” a secondary coach said.

Prior to the 2019 season, Goff was able to thrive playing off Todd Gurley while the star back was at the top of his game. Teams had to emphasize slowing down the All-Pro talent out of the backfield, opening things up for the quarterback to capitalize.

With Gurley playing at an MVP level in 2018, Goff helped lead the Rams to a 13-3 record. Individually, he completed 364-of-561 (64.9%) pass attempts resulting in 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He finished with more yards and touchdowns with fewer picks on 65 fewer throws than he attempted in 2019.

In 2019, Gurley was no longer playing at that elite level many across the league are accustomed to seeing him playing at. That forced the Rams to place a much greater emphasis on Goff being able to set the tone through the passing game. There was a real drop-off in his execution.

For the Los Angeles Rams to return to the playoffs during the 2020 season, it will be crucial for Jared Goff to take a step forward in his production. It’s now his time to achieve the results many thought he was capable of when he went No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft.
