NFL Exec Makes Huge Prediction For Baker Mayfield’s Future With Browns

Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns fell well short of expectations in the 2021 season. Some people believed they would be a dark horse contender for the Super Bowl, but they didn’t even qualify for the postseason.

The Browns finished the season 8-9 and were never able to re-find the success they had during a 3-1 start. A big reason for the team’s inconsistency was the play of Mayfield.

Mayfield did battle through a shoulder injury, so he should be given credit for toughing it out and trying to help his team win games. However, even when at 100 percent, he didn’t play at the same level we saw him finish the 2020 season out with.

His inability to get on the same page with Odell Beckham Jr. was disappointing, to say the least. While Beckham was labeled as the problem in Cleveland, that has proven not to be true. He has looked great during his time with the Los Angeles Rams, helping them to the NFC Championship game as the No. 2 option behind Cooper Kupp.

Mayfield doesn’t have the most elite weapons to work with, but not all of the blame can be placed on his supporting staff. The best quarterbacks will elevate their teammates, as Mayfield has a great run game and a strong offensive line to rely on.

This offseason is an important one for Mayfield’s future with the team. He is eligible for an extension, but there is a real debate that could be had about whether or not the Browns are better off going in a different direction.

One NFL executive thinks that they will. In a piece at ESPN, executives around the league made some predictions for 2022. One of them involved Mayfield and they believe that the former No. 1 overall pick will be on the move.

“But at the end of the day, it’s not a great fit. He’d be best in a shotgun, up-tempo offense like they have in Arizona,” an NFC exec said. “The Browns will get rid of the only good quarterback they’ve had in years and fall into the same traps of the past.”

Well, he certainly won’t be usurping Kyler Murray as the starting quarterback with the Arizona Cardinals, but a system like that is what this executive thinks will benefit him the most. Being in shotgun will enable him to get the ball out of his hands faster, which could also mitigate the number of passes being batted down at the line of scrimmage.

The Seattle Seahawks, should they move on from Russell Wilson, was mentioned as one possible landing spot for Baker Mayfield. Their offensive line woes, however, are something that could deter even the most promising quarterback from having success.
