NFL Exec Reveals One Free Agent The Cowboys Should Target

The Dallas Cowboys have been working hard on restructuring contracts this offseason to help get under the salary cap. They entered the offseason about $22 million over and will have some tough decisions to make as it pertains to moving on from some veterans.

One player who has been mentioned pretty consistently in recent weeks about being moved on is Amari Cooper. Dallas can save about $16 million of his cap hit by releasing or trading him, and according to Adam Schefter, the plan right now is to release him.

If the team releases Cooper, it would open the door for CeeDee Lamb to become their unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver. But, their depth could also be taking a major hit. In addition to Cooper’s potential departure, Michael Gallup and Cedrick Wilson are also hitting free agency this offseason.

Moving on from three players, who all started games last season, would be a tough pill to swallow but also create a huge hole on the roster. They would likely address some depth with picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, but free agency is also flush with wide receivers.

One NFL executive believes the Cowboys should target Allen Lazard in free agency. Lazard spent the first four seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers and could be on the move himself because of salary cap issues they are having.

“The Cowboys releasing Amari Cooper comes as no real surprise. With that in mind, they should consider pursuing a guy like Allen Lazard. He would be a great fit with CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup.”

Lazard is a restricted free agent, which means the Packers can match any offer sheet that he may sign with another team. Normally, should a team elect to not match an offer, they would be compensated by receiving a draft pick in the round from which the tendered player was drafted.

However, since Lazard was an undrafted free agent, no compensation would be required. That makes him a more attractive target to any team that might be interested in signing him this offseason as they will not be surrendering a draft pick to acquire him.

Dallas could be a great landing spot for Lazard as he could be looking at a No. 2 or 3 role at wide receiver depending on how the offseason shakes out. The Cowboys did place the franchise tag on tight end Dalton Schultz, who was a key cog in the passing game last season.

But, even with Schultz back, there is a chance that Lazard could still be a starter. Even if Gallup is re-signed, he might be slowed down at the start of the season because of a knee injury suffered in Week 17. If the team brings in Lazard, it is unlikely they would retain Wilson as well. The general feeling is that the Cowboys will only retain one of Gallup and Wilson if they retain either at all.
