NFL Exec Thinks Commanders Are Pursuing Trade For Aaron Rodgers

Arguably the biggest storyline of the NFL offseason is what will happen between the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers held out for a majority of the offseason in 2021 and people are patiently waiting to see what he will decide to do for the 2022 season. One sleeper team to keep an eye on for a potential trade is the Washington Commanders.

As long as Rodgers is in the fold, the Packers are Super Bowl contenders. They have won 13 games in the regular season for three straight years and are one of the best teams not only in the NFC but NFL as a whole.

If he is traded, the team acquiring him will likely turn into instant contenders. Rodgers is a sizable upgrade for all but a handful of teams at the quarterback position. The Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts have been two of the teams most prominently named as a landing spot for Rodgers.

They are not the only teams pursuing him, however. According to Dianna Russini of ESPN, there are numerous teams with offers on the table and Rodgers is expected to make his decision soon. Ultimately, the decision still remains with the Packers about what will happen.

There are always some dark horse teams that pop up in situations like this. One of the teams that could be pursuing a trade for him without many headlines is the Washington Commanders.

An NFL executive provided his thoughts on the situation when talking to NFL Analysis Network. They believe the inclusion of Chase Young, who is reportedly available for a big enough upgrade at quarterback, would push the Commanders over the top.

“The Broncos may be getting the most hype when it comes to (Aaron) Rodgers, but don’t count out Washington. They are looking to swing big and I’ve heard rumblings that they’re pursuing Rodgers with Chase Young on the table. If they were to make that deal, Green Bay could build their defense around Young and move on from Za’Darius Smith more comfortably to save money.”

Washington requires an upgrade at the quarterback position. Taylor Heinicke was okay replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick last season, but he is better suited for a backup role. Rodgers would help make the Commanders instant challengers in the NFC East and an under-the-radar Super Bowl contender, especially if they can get their defense back on track.

While the offense struggled at times last season, the pieces are in place for that side of the ball to be a strong unit. They have an above-average offensive line, a good running game with Antonio Gibson and a legitimate No. 1 receiver in Terry McLaurin.

If you add Rodgers to that mix, the Commanders will have something brewing for the 2022 season.
