NFL Free Agency 2021: 4 early targets the 49ers should be watching

49ers, Frank Gore

4. Frank Gore

This is a completely emotional pick. If this does not make Niners fans happy, then something is wrong. It has been strange seeing Gore in any other uniform even though it has been five years since he left San Francisco. He spent the first 10 years of his career with the Niners and leads the franchise with 11,073 rushing yards.

It is unknown when the 37-year old running back will call it a career. It is only right that he makes that decision as a 49er. Emotions aside, Gore is the exact player that you want on your team. Mostert might be the running back of the future.

If so, Gore is a perfect compliment. He spent the 2019 season in Buffalo where he ran for 599 yards behind Devin Singletary. Gore will be in the same role this season behind Le’Veon Bell on the New York Jets.

Gore is 1,379 yards behind Walter Payton for second all-time on theNFL’s rushing list. Kyle Shanahan would use Gore perfectly within his system to help him reach that mark. Not to mention, he will come at a bargain price.

The Jets are paying Gore just $1 million in 2020 for his services. Overall, this is a low-risk move that will bring a legendary 49er back to town for the final years of his career. Maybe even get him a ring before hanging up the cleats.
