NFL Free Agency 2021: 5 way-too-early landing spots for Joey Bosa

Joey Bosa, Chargers
NFL Analysis Network

Joey Bosa entered the NFL in 2016 as the third overall pick. He immediately made an impact, generating 10.5 sacks and winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. However, the 25-year-old defensive end could test free agency next spring.

This coming season is the final year in Bosa’s rookie contract. With Cleveland’s Myles Garrett recently signing a five-year, $125 mega-extension, Bosa’s market value is higher than ever. He could easily command a deal worth more than $20 million annually if the Los Angeles Chargers let him hit free agency.

Keep in mind the 2021 salary cap numbers used in this article are only projections. Depending on how the 2020 season plays out, the cap situation could change drastically. Ordinarily, cap space rises almost every year. However, financial losses because of COVID-19 could keep the cap stagnant or even drop it in 2021.

Many viable free agents remain unsigned this offseason because teams don’t know precisely how their cap situations could change. That makes projecting ahead a year somewhat tricky. Take the numbers used in this article with a grain of salt, realizing they could change in the coming months.

Plenty of teams could show interest in Bosa next year, but only a few genuinely need a superstar pass rusher. Even fewer teams possess the means of signing Bosa. For now, these five teams seem like plausible destinations for the rising star.
