Current Running Back Situation
The Miami Dolphins do not have a legitimate starting Running Back past the 2021 season. Jason Howard signed a two-year, $10 million deal. Matt Breida was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2020 5th-round pick. Malcolm Perry was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft.
If Howard and Breida split time and Perry learns the system, there is a good chance that the Dolphins will still need a stud running back. Howard and Breida are great backs, but both haven’t broke out yet despite having plenty of potential. They both might excel in 2020, but could easily disappoint.
Someone like Jones could come in and immediately add a long-term running back to the roster. This would only help newly-drafted quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who the Dolphins hope will be the new franchise quarterback they desperately need.
Plus, with the possibility of no college football in 2020 and those players missing a year of development, signing a free agent instead drafting another young player would help Miami next year instead of a few years down the road.
