NFL: How will each quarterback in the NFC North fare in 2020?

Projecting Chicago’s quarterback situation is a lot like fishing with a shotgun: there’s no science to it, but if you get it right, you can impress a few friends. The further into 2019 we got, the louder we heard the calls for Trubisky’s job. And as the offseason wore on, it seemed the front office felt the same as they opted to trade for former Super Bowl winner Nick Foles from Jacksonville.

And honestly, as training camp has now been underway for over a week following rigorous COVID testing procedures, we don’t seem to be any closer to an answer as to who will be taking the snaps in Week 1. The Cult of Foles follows in powerful ways across the league, and many Bears fans already find themselves drawn to the shiny new toy.

However, Foles also bring his own baggage. When pressed into starting roles over the past few seasons, the former Eagle has excelled in clean-up duty, and struggled when the opposing defense has time and film prep. In most recent memory, our current view of Foles is as the man who lost his job to rookie Gardner Minshew.

That’s to say nothing of Trubisky and his own struggles under head coach Matt Nagy. Despite starting the vast majority of games since being drafted in 2017, the former North Carolina quarterback has yet to surpass 3,500 yards and has continued to come up small in big moments.

If I had to choose, I would say Trubisky wins the job out of camp. For all his flaws, he is still a more talented passer than Foles, and talent tends to win out in camp. However, after a middling early schedule, Chicago runs the gamut of tough matchups through the middle portion of the season, which could bring Trubisky back down to earth.

I would not expect him to last past Week 9 at the latest, and the yank could come even sooner than that. If Trubisky has rough showings against teams like Tampa Bay or LA, Foles may win the job before October ends. In either case, Chicago will be picking earlier than they would like in the 2021 draft barring a true emergence from one of these inconsistent signal callers.
