The San Francisco 49ers once again look like they will be among the best teams in the NFL. Their roster is loaded with elite talent on both ends of the ball and they have excellent depth as well as complementary pieces.
With quarterback Brock Purdy healthy and working his way back into form, there aren’t even any pressing injury concerns for the 49ers to worry about. Knock on wood, they are healthy and ready to get the regular season underway.
The only question mark that remains for San Francisco heading into the season is what kind of extension with star pass rusher Nick Bosa receive. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is set to play out the fifth-year option on his rookie contract in 2023 and both sides are working toward a long-term agreement.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that agreement could be a massive one. While making an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Schefter revealed that the 49ers could make Bosa the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history once it is all said and done.
“The 49ers and Nick Bosa will figure out a way to get this deal done,” Schefter said.
Given how productive Bosa has been throughout his NFL career, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the 49ers are going to reset the pass-rushing market on a deal with him. The No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has made the Pro Bowl in each of his three healthy seasons, recording at least 9.0 sacks in each of them.
If Bosa does become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, he would become the fourth 49ers player to have the highest total valued contract at their respective position. Running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle and left tackle Trent Williams all currently sit atop their respective positions in total contract value.
Bosa certainly deserves that lofty status. He has quickly proven to be one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL as a one-man wrecking crew coming off the edge. Only 26 years old, we may not have seen the best that the former Buckeye even has to offer yet.
