NFL Insider Drops Bombshell Report On Rams QB Matthew Stafford

Matthew Stafford historically has been rather quiet about his dealings with teams in connection with his contract. However, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback has turned heads this off-season with an unusual confrontation with his front office.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Stafford wants more money and an adjusted contract.

“Stafford, to my understanding, wants more guaranteed money… wants his contract adjusted… he is going to show up to training camp,” Rapoport said.

The proclamation was made via a clip of NFL Network’s “The Insiders.”

Stafford has won a Super Bowl for the Rams, but his advancing age is not something fans are brushing under the rug. Stafford is 36 years old. Most quarterbacks retire before the age of 40.

The quarterback is currently signed through the 2028 season. At the end of his deal, he will be 38 years old and heading into an age 39 season.

However, Stafford doesn’t appear to want to extend his contract. Instead, he wants more guaranteed money. The request is an unusual one for players to make, assuming he isn’t also interested in adding extra runway.

Stafford’s request comes on the heels of a season in which the quarterback beat national expectations. After struggling in 2022, most braced for the Stafford and the Rams to fall into a rut. Instead, the Rams pulled themselves out of an early hole and made the playoffs. However, their season came to a close after a tussle with Jared Goff’s Detroit Lions in the playoffs.

Stafford threw for at least two touchdowns in four of the last five games of the season, including the playoff loss to the Lions.

Los Angeles Rams stumble into predictable Matthew Stafford problem following early success

The Rams knew they were signing up for an end-of-career period of Stafford when they traded and extended him in 2021.

They knew that by handing off Jared Goff, whose career started in 2016, for Stafford, whose career started in 2009, they would run into this problem. Most players have trouble accepting less money as they age. Even if they usually cave in the end, it can lead to disagreements in the short term.

However, for the Rams that traded so much to get Stafford and won a Super Bowl as a result, is adding a little extra to the pot that much of an ask?

With the veteran signal-caller set to report to training camp, it appears no immediate consequences face the Rams if they don’t oblige. That said, how long will Matthew Stafford remain patient?
