Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is entering the final year of his deal, but the Dolphins still have not seem to have made much progress with him in contract negotiations.

This has many wondering just what Miami’s thought process is.

Do the Dolphins see Tagovailoa as their franchise quarterback? If not, what exactly is their solution?

NFL insider Steve Wyche spoke with former NFL signal-caller Robert Griffin III this week and provided an update on the situation between Miami and Tagovailoa and doesn’t quite understand why the Dolphins are dragging their feet.

Wyche feels that Miami is actually hurting itself by waiting so long and specifically highlighted Jared Goff’s new deal with the Detroit Lions as an example.

Goff will be making $53 million annually on his new contract, which has almost certainly driven up the price for Tagovailoa.

Not that Tagovailoa will be landing the same amount of money as Goff, but rising tides lift all boats, so by Goff landing that deal, Tagovailoa’s value increased.

Wyche seems to think that something will eventually get done between the Dolphins and Tagovailoa but isn’t sure about what the structure will be like.

He adds that the structure could end up being a sticking point for both sides.

Tagovailoa is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played every game and led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards to go along with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He completed 69.3 percent of his passes and posted a passer rating of 101.1 en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by Miami with the fifth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

After a couple of middling seasons to begin his career, Tagovailoa broke out in 2022, finishing with 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight picks while completing 64.8 percent of his throws and registering a league-high 105.5 passer rating.

In spite of Tagovailoa’s impressive statistical production over the last two seasons, many still have questions about his legitimacy.

Some feel that he is merely a product of two great receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Others think he benefits greatly from head coach Mike McDaniel’s system.

Tagovailoa’s struggles against playoff-caliber teams and difficulty playing in cooler weather are also concerns.

We’ll see if the Dolphins are able to strike a pact with Tua Tagovailoa before the 2024 campaign begins.
