The Green Bay Packers and quarterback Jordan Love are trying to get a new deal done, and it might end up happening sooner than you think.

During an appearance on SportsCenter on Saturday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said that the Packers want to strike a pact with Love as soon as possible.

“[General manager] Brian Gutekunst wants to get something done before training camp,” Fowler said (h/t Tyler Brooke of Heavy.com). “Probably a little bit of pressure on him after the way Aaron Rodgers’ situation went years ago. They want a cleaner situation for his contract.”

Love is entering the final year of his deal and is slated to earn $10.5 million in base salary in 2024.

Jordan Love Is In a Unique Situation With Packers

You may be thinking, “Wow, Love’s deal is up already?”

That’s because he didn’t get the chance to start until his fourth NFL season.

Love, who played his collegiate football at Utah State, was selected by the Packers with the 26th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, Aaron Rodgers was still under center at that time, so Love spent the first three years of his career backing up the future Hall-of-Famer.

Green Bay then traded Rodgers to the New York Jets last offseason, which opened the door for Love to start.

The 25-year-old experienced significant growing pains early. He put together a couple of strong performances over the first three weeks, leading the Packers to a 2-1 record and guiding them to a thrilling comeback win over the New Orleans Saints.

Then, over his next six games, Love was pretty dreadful, totaling seven touchdowns and seven interceptions as Green Bay went just 1-5 during that stretch.

Love was hit with massive criticism throughout that time, with many questioning whether or not he was legitimately the Packers’ quarterback of the future. Some even felt he should have been benched.

But Love wasn’t finished.

Over the last eight games of the season, Love went on a tear, accumulating 18 passing touchdowns and just one pick as Green Bay went 6-2 to sneak into the playoffs. He then lit up the Dallas Cowboys with three touchdowns in a Wild Card Round win before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.

Love ended up registering 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.1 on the season.

The future looks very bright in the tundra so long as Jordan Love is calling the shots, so you can certainly see why the Packers appear to be in a rush to provide him with a contract extension.
