The Philadelphia Eagles ended up retaining Nick Sirianni as head coach, but during the process, there were rumors that the team could replace him with Bill Belichick.
Obviously, that did not happen, but it is apparently still on the table for the future.
Greg Bedard of The Boston Sports Journal made an appearance on “Felger & Mazz” of 98.5 The Sports Hub this week, and he dropped some very interesting information on the Eagles’ interest in Belichick.
“But I do think— remember, I told you guys that, before the end of the season, teams had already reached out to Bill, back-channeled on Bill,” Bedard said. “I thought the Falcons were definitely one of them. I’m now pretty convinced that the Eagles were the other one. When things were going south, they thought this might end poorly with Sirianni, and I wouldn’t be surprised given the relationship that Howie [Roseman] and Bill have that the Eagles were one of those teams to back channel through Bill.”
Of course, Atlanta was the only team to interview Belichick, but it ended up hiring Raheem Morris as its head coach.
It comes as no surprise that Philadelphia may have had some interest in Belichick, given the fact that it lost five of its last six regular-season games before ultimately being routed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.
Many felt that Sirianni had lost the locker room, and he certainly made some questionable decisions during the back end of the season.
As of right now, Philly is willing to give Sirianni another chance. After all, he did lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance last year. However, you have to wonder just how long his leash will be in 2024.
If Philadelphia gets off to a bad start next season, could the club can Sirianni and reach out to Belichick?
At the current point in time, Bill Belichick will be watching from home next year. We’ll see how long he actually remains away from the game.
