NFL Legend Reveals Main Thing The Chiefs Are Missing

Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, Chiefs

When watching the Kansas City Chiefs this season, something looks different about their team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Their defense is playing at a high level, but the offense is on track to be the least productive of the Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes era.

For years that duo has helped Kansas City overcome shortcomings on the roster, but their magic isn’t working as consistently in 2023. While many teams would kill to have an offense this productive be considered a down season, the Chiefs aren’t playing close to the norm we have become accustomed to.

A big reason for that is their lack of weapons at wide receiver. On Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, Justin Watson ran the most routes out of anyone at the position.

It has been a void in the lineup all season. The Chiefs took a risk going with so many inexperienced players at the position this season and it has not paid off. Rookie second-round pick Rashee Rice has played well, but they haven’t gotten the kind of production they had hoped from Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney.

While the lack of production behind star tight end Travis Kelce has been concerning, the biggest issue isn’t a personnel one in the opinion of former star wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. In his opinion, the main issue is no longer having Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator.

“Many people will say it was all Andy Reid. But there was something that Eric Bieniemy did that allowed this offense to look different,” Johnson said on a recent segment of UNDISPUTED on FS1 and Fox Sports.

While the Chiefs have underwhelmed, based on their sky-high standards, Bieniemy has turned the Washington Commanders into a solid offense. He has overseen a unit led by Sam Howell, who leads the NFL in completions, attempts and passing yards and is inside the top 10 in other stats as well.

His presence is certainly one the Chiefs have been missing. He helped the team overcome the loss of Tyreek Hill in 2022, who was traded to the Miami Dolphins. Those adjustments just haven’t occurred this season, as Matt Nagy isn’t having the same impact Bieniemy was able to have.
