Legendary NFL wide receiver Michael Irvin had some massive praise for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes following the Chiefs’ Week 9 win over the Miami Dolphins.
“Patrick Mahomes is basically God playing quarterback,” Irvin said on FS1’s Undisputed. “I don’t care what you guys say, he doesn’t have quite the talent he needs at wide receiver, but he always makes just enough plays to keep them in the game. He’s a phenomenal talent.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs defeated their former teammate in Dolphins wide out Tyreek Hill this past weekend, and Irvin laments the fact that Mahomes and Hill no longer have a connection.
“That [Mahomes-Hill combo] should have never been broken up, that was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen on a football field,” added Irvin.
Mahomes went 20-for-30 with 185 yards and a couple of touchdowns while carrying the ball six times for 24 yards in Kansas City’s 21-14 victory over Miami.
On the season overall, the two-time MVP has thrown for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 68.6 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.7.
The Chiefs have been widely criticized for their thin receiving corps this season, as they allowed JuJu Smith-Schuster to walk back in the spring and never truly replaced him.
That came just one offseason after Kansas City traded Hill to the Dolphins.
Patrick Mahomes managed to lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl championship without Hill last year, and even with a shaky group of receivers in 2023, he has guided Kansas City to a 7-2 record, good for the second-best mark in the NFL.
The Texas Tech product has led the league in passing touchdowns twice, most recently doing so last season when he totaled 41. His career high came back during his first year as Kansas City’s full-time starter in 2018, when he racked up 50 scores.
The Chiefs will have a Week 10 bye before hosting the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch on Nov. 20.
