The Dallas Cowboys suffered a major loss during their 2022 NFL season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football. Not only did they lose the game, but quarterback Dak Prescott injured his thumb, which required surgery.

He will be sidelined for multiple weeks, which will thrust Cooper Rush into the starting lineup. While many people wrote the Cowboys off, Rush led them to an impressive victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2, evening their record up at 1-1.

Dallas will now head on the road again, this time to face off with their NFC East rivals, the surprising 2-0 New York Giants. This will be a big game for the Cowboys as they look to stay afloat without Prescott in the lineup.

While the starting job will be Prescott’s when he is ready to return to the field, that may not necessarily be a good thing for the Cowboys. As pointed out by Colin Cowherd on his show this week, the Cowboys have struggled to beat good teams with Prescott under center.

In his career, Prescott has put up solid stats against playoff teams, completing 65.6 percent of his passes with 57 touchdowns compared to 29 interceptions. He has a strong passer rating of 93, but the team’s record is only 12-21.

Some of that could certainly be attributed to the Cowboys having a lackluster defense at times during Prescott’s time as the starter. But, he is regarded as a very high-level quarterback despite having stats that are virtually identical to those of Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, who no one holds in the same regard as Prescott.

It certainly takes more than just the quarterback to win in the NFL. A total team effort is required despite the quarterback being the only one a record is held against.

That record is certainly not encouraging, as the Cowboys have major expectations every season. But, without a quarterback that elevates his performance against the best teams in the league, it will be tough for Dallas to keep up with the other contenders in the league.
