Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is signing a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, according to multiple NFL reports.

Elliott tweeted, “One Five, all the way live ! @Patriots,” referencing his plans to wear jersey No. 15, the number he wore in college while playing for Ohio State. Elliott wore No. 21 with the Cowboys.

Elliott’s one-year deal with the Patriots includes a $3 million base salary and a $1 million signing bonus and can be worth up to $6 million with incentives, according to NFL insider ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The three-time Pro Bowler, who was released by the Cowboys on March 15 in a salary cap move, had a career-low 876 rushing yards in 2022, but he did score 12 touchdowns on 231 carries.

The 28-year-old Elliott has rushed for 8,262 yards and 68 touchdowns in the NFL. The Patriots will visit the Cowboys this season in Week 4. It will be interesting to hear how Elliott is greeted by the fans in his return to Dallas.

The Patriots have traditionally split the early-down workload between two running backs under head coach Bill Belichick, who spoke to Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones for insight and evaluation of Elliott before the Patriots hosted Elliott on a visit on July 29, according to NFL insider Ed Werder of ESPN.

The Patriots’ lack of depth at running back had been notable during training camp, which is why the franchise decided to sign Elliott. New England went 8-9 last season and missed the playoffs. Elliott has appeared in six postseason games. He has racked up 393 yards and scored two touchdowns.
