NFL: One trade each team in the AFC South should pursue before the season

Trade Package: Indianapolis Colts trade a third-round pick for Melvin Ingram.

While Indianapolis has a solid defense, they are still a bit weak on the edge. Trading for a veteran edge rusher makes a lot of sense for the Colts. One player to keep an eye on is Chargers’ veteran edge rusher Melvin Ingram.

Los Angeles just spent big money to ensure Joey Bosa stays in powder blue. There are plenty of other big contracts coming up this season for Los Angeles. Trading away Ingram would make a lot of sense because they likely will not have the money to re-sign him in the future.

Although Ingram is 31 years old, he is still producing at a very high rate. He likely has three more quality years of football until his play begins to decline. The Colts are in win now mode. Adding a star edge rusher would help push this team closer to Super Bowl contention.

The pass rush may also help a somewhat weak secondary as well. The Colts’ secondary has potential, but they are not close to elite. A strong pass rush always helps a weaker secondary, and it would yield more turnover opportunities as well.

While a third-round pick may seem like a lot, if it gives the Colts a shot at a championship run it is well worth it. Meanwhile, Los Angeles gets rid of a big contract in what will surely be an offseason where cap space will be needed to re-sign star players. The Chargers could possibly use this extra pick to find Ingram’s replacement.

Both teams get value with this trade. It would be very smart for the Colts and Chargers to reach out to one another and make it happen.
