1. Buccaneers Sign Tom Brady
The Buccaneers have been an average-to-below average team in the NFL for over the past decade. While for a portion of this past decade they had bad quarterback play, things changed when they drafted Jameis Winston with the No. 1 selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. Tampa Bay just never significantly invested in surrounding him with the right pieces to win.
To make matter worse, Bucs head coach Bruce Arians deployed an offensive system that forced Winston to throw deep too much and make many risky throws. The result ended up being that Winston threw for 5,109 passing yards (most in NFL), but also became the first QB with at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.
To everyone’s surprise, the long-time superstar quarterback of the Patriots, Tom Brady, decided to leave the franchise after 20 years. He took part in nine Super Bowl appearances and winning an NFL record of six. The opportunity to land the all-time great prompted Tampa Bay to move on from Winston.
With Brady, the Buccaneers now are willing to make those investments to help him win another Super Bowl before he retires. His presence and proven track record as a winner will help build a culture. Additionally, he will also help keep Arians in check, not allowing him to do what he did with Winston by forcing him to throw deep so often and make risky decisions.
