NFL: Ranking the situations veteran QBs on new teams face in 2020

7. Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints

While it may seem odd for Jameis Winston to make this list considering the omissions, there’s more to the situation to consider. He will be in a position to audition for the starting quarterback role with the New Orleans Saints in the post-Drew Brees era.

There were other situations Winston could have chosen to enter this offseason that would have afforded him meaningful playing time in 2020. The choice to sign with the Saints was one that has the long-term in mind since he won’t be held down by a bad team and damage his stock.

The main rationale for Winston not being excluded from this list is mainly due to his possible outlook beyond 2020. If Brees retires, Winston could have a chance to compete for the starting job in New Orleans and that would be one of the best jobs in the league.

It’s no guarantee that Winston returns to the Saints next offseason. They could elect to save salary cap spending room by rolling with Taysom Hill in that role. Regardless, being able to learn from Brees and Sean Payton for a year and re-enter free agency in 2021 isn’t a bad situation.
