Chicago Bears Trade for Khalil Mack
The Las Vegas Raiders (Oakland at the time) did not want to pay Khalil Mack the type of contract he was seeking. The Chicago Bears ended up being the team willing to make the blockbuster trade in order to land the star edge rusher and give him the deal he sought.
The deal involved the Bears receiving Mack, a 2020 second-round pick, and a 2020 seventh-round pick in exchange for two first-round picks (2019 & 2020), a 2019 sixth-round pick, and a 2020 third-round selection. In total, it took six draft selections to land Mack while getting back. twoin return.
From a value standpoint, the Bears made out well in this trade and Mack has made a significant impact. The main issue has been simply not having enough production on offense to field a competitive enough team to finish better than the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
A lot of the shortcomings for the Bears fall on the lack of development from Mitchell Trubisky and a general lack of impact from players not named Allen Robinson on offense. Had Chicago selected a talent like Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson instead of Trubisky, the Bears would be dangerous.
There is plenty of reason to believe that Mack will have a much stronger 2020 season from a stats standpoint now that Akiem Hicks is back in the lineup. Teams were able to send substantial blocking help to slow down Mack throughout last season in ways that won’t be possible with Hicks.
