Denver Broncos, Russell Wilson, NFL Rumors

When the Denver Broncos acquired Russell Wilson in a blockbuster NFL trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2022, it was supposed to elevate the Broncos to contender status.

Instead, Denver seems even worse off than it was prior to landing Wilson.

The Broncos have gone just 5-14 with Wilson under center, going 5-12 last year and getting off to an 0-2 start in 2023.

Wilson labored mightily through his debut season in the Mile High City, throwing for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing just 60.5 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 84.4 in what was the worst year of his NFL career.

The veteran’s numbers look considerably better through two games this season, as Wilson has logged 485 yards, five touchdowns and a pick while completing 68.2 percent of his throws and recording a passer rating of 108.5. However, he went just 18-for-32 and was sacked seven times in the Broncos’ Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Russell Wilson & Denver Broncos Updates

Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright feels that Sean Payton, who is in his first year as Denver’s head coach, is getting fed up with Wilson and could be preparing to bench him.

Upon taking the Broncos position, Payton, who experienced considerable success with the New Orleans Saints, criticized former Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett for not doing a good enough job with the offense.

Well, through two games, Payton is finding out that perhaps Hackett’s job was more difficult than he initially thought.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Russell Wilson & Denver Broncos Updates

To be fair, it’s hard to imagine that Payton would seriously consider benching Wilson right now. Even with his so-so performance against the Commanders, his numbers thus far in 2023 speak for themselves. He has certainly played a heck of a lot better than he did a year ago. That’s for sure.

The Broncos will take on the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon.
