Richard Sherman could return to San Francisco 49ers

After a strong season with the San Francisco 49ers, veteran cornerback Richard Sherman has remained unsigned. That could soon change with the 2021 NFL Draft having come and passed. However, now, it’s a question of where Sherman will sign, and the latest NFL rumors provide more clarity on his options.

According to The Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman, the 49ers had preliminary discussions with Richard Sherman about returning to the team. A deal is not close to being finalized by any stretch, but San Francisco and Sherman both are open to a return.

“Sherman, 33, remains a free agent after spending the past three seasons with the 49ers after signing there in 2018. He’s also had conversations with the Seattle Seahawks, the source said.

“A signing is not imminent, but discussions could accelerate in the coming weeks.”

There will be plenty of other teams to keep an eye on for Sherman as potential landing spots. The Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints, and Las Vegas Raiders are each teams that come to mind as they’ve been mentioned as possible suitors in the past.

“Sherm’s in a good situation. Sherm’s a businessman. He’s going to find the best opportunity for him, ” Kyle Shanahan said Saturday, via Cam Inman of The Mercury News. “Teams are going to want him. But when you’re in a situation like him and his age and you have the credentials he does, you sit back, watch and find the best opportunity.”

Sherman, 33, isn’t quite as dynamic as once was when he was a key cog in the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defense. However, he is still a highly productive cornerback that provides a strong veteran presence for the rest of the group. Where the concern lies is in the fact that he appeared in only five games due to a calf injury.

It remains to be seen where Richard Sherman will decide to sign but he will have no shortage of intriguing options, whether it’s with the San Francisco 49ers or not. In the meantime, he will be a top name to watch in NFL rumors.
