NFL Scout Reveals Ideal Free Agency Target For The Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are officially in the market for a quarterback again. That now becomes their biggest need as they traded last season’s starter, Carson Wentz, to the Washington Commanders on Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to a quarterback, there are a few other position groups that could use an upgrade on the offensive side of the ball. Finding a No. 2 option behind Michael Pittman Jr. is something they can address in free agency and tight end Jack Doyle announced his retirement. The offensive line could be down one starter from 2021 as well.

The extra draft picks acquired in the Wentz trade will certainly help them fill a few of those holes on offense. Indianapolis will have a good amount of cap space to spend as well, as they can turn into contenders with improved quarterback play pretty quickly in the AFC.

One sneaky need for the Colts this offseason, however, is on the defensive side of the ball at cornerback. Xavier Rhodes has played well for the team the last two seasons but is hitting free agency this year, in addition to T.J. Carrie.

That is partly why one NFL scout believes the perfect free-agent target for the Colts this offseason is Patrick Peterson.

“For the Colts, there are quite a few needs. But one that sticks out the most is at cornerback. If I’m Indianapolis, going out and signing a guy like Patrick Peterson would be the best move Chris Ballard could make.”

Peterson spent last season with the Minnesota Vikings. He is no longer at the level he was with the Arizona Cardinals when he was a perennial All-Pro, but can still hold his own on the perimeter of the defense.

Peterson has also been open to transitioning to safety if the need arose. That willingness to make a position change is something plenty of teams would appreciate, as he offers some versatility in the defensive backfield.

Given his experience and veteran savvy, he is more than capable of still holding his own. But, relying on him as a lockdown No. 1 option could present some issues for the Colts if they don’t replenish quality depth behind him.
