With only three weeks remaining in the 2023 NFL regular season, there is a lot still at stake. There are still plenty of playoff spots up for grabs, but there are also a few teams that have been eliminated, turning their attention to the offseason.

Before we know it, the NFL Combine will be underway and teams will be finalizing their draft boards, seeking out the perfect prospect to add to their team. One of the deepest positions in this year’s draft is quarterback, as several players have a chance to be first-round picks.

Caleb Williams out of USC and Drake Maye out of North Carolina are considered the cream of the crop in this year’s draft class. Many analysts project them to go first and second in the draft, but there are other signal callers that will be looking to move up the draft board.

NFL News & Rumors: J.J. McCarthy, Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings, 2024 NFL Draft Updates

One of those players is Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy is a player that is tough for some evaluators to grade because of how he is used at Michigan. They run the ball early and often and blew out a majority of their opponents, skewing the perception of McCarthy.

He attempted only 287 passes this season, throwing for 2,630 yards and 18 touchdowns with four interceptions. But, he did see an improvement when it came to accuracy, as his completion percentage jumped up to 74.2 percent.

Player comps are a thing many analysts like to do, and when it comes to McCarthy there is one NFL player who has been mentioned numerous times as his comp. According to Matt Miller of ESPN, who spoke to a few scouts, McCarthy is an athletic version of Minnesota Vikings quarterback, Kirk Cousins.

NFL News & Rumors: J.J. McCarthy, Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings, 2024 NFL Draft Updates

McCarthy seems to be the quarterback destined to shoot up the draft board during this year’s cycle. While Cousins wasn’t an immediate success in the NFL, teams selecting near the top of the draft in need of a signal caller would certainly sign up for the level of production he has provided in his career.

Cousins has four Pro Bowl nominations and has surpassed the 4,000-yard mark seven times. That kind of production is hard to come by and if McCarthy can get close to it in the NFL, he is going to make a franchise very happy.
