The New England Patriots will enter the 2020 NFL season with a new face at the starting quarterback role. With Tom Brady now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the job will belong to Cam Newton.
After suffering a season-ending injury in 2019, Newton is now healthy and ready to return to game-action. The main question surrounding the Patriots is centered on whether or not they will be able to remain in contention for the top spot in the AFC East standings.
According to The Athletic NFL Staff, a confidential scout expressed his belief that Cam Newton will lead the Patriots to the AFC East division title in the 2020 season.
“I believe a healthy Cam Newton helps the Patriots win the AFC East. Look at the quarterbacks in the AFC against New England’s defense. Remove Tom Brady and they still have to figure out how to score on New England’s defense.
“Cam won an MVP with his tight end being the best receiver on his team without anyone outside.” … “Cam is the real deal. A lot of teams are about to find out why he’s still elite. New England has some pieces — guys that are way better than his MVP-year targets.”
Even despite having key offseason departures and some opt-outs, the Patriots will still have an effective defense. Regardless, New England will need a strong performance from Newton on a weekly basis in order to pull out enough wins to win the AFC East.
Newton will have Julian Edelman as his No. 1 receiving threat with a need for N’Keal Harry and the Patriots’ unproven tight ends to step up. If that happens, New England’s offense could end up catching teams by surprise throughout the 2020 season.
The first chance Cam Newton will get in his bounce-back campaign will come against the Miami Dolphins. The favorable matchup could be what the 2015 NFL MVP needs to be able to get off to a hot start to the season.
