Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz and Cleveland Browns’ Baker Mayfield are two of the most polarizing quarterbacks entering the 2020 NFL season. Both flashed incredible potential in previous years, but fans wonder if the two young quarterbacks are legitimate stars or fool’s gold.
Today, we’ll explore the future of both quarterbacks. We’ll also discuss which player should perform at a higher level this coming season. The answer shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the gap in talent between the two quarterbacks is larger than fans realize.
Wentz entered the NFL as the second overall pick in 2016. A North Dakota State product, he didn’t face the same level of competition in college as most quarterbacks. However, that didn’t stop Wentz from putting together a promising rookie campaign. The former Bison threw for 3,782 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
The Cleveland Browns drafted Mayfield with the first overall pick in 2018. The former Heisman Trophy winner eventually won the starting job and put on an incredible rookie performance. He threw for 3,725 yards, a rookie record 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
While Mayfield performed better as a rookie than Wentz, the two quarterbacks began trending in opposite directions during their second seasons. Wentz put together an MVP campaign that was only derailed by injuries. The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl without their star quarterback, who finished the season with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Things didn’t go so well for Mayfield. Despite Cleveland adding several talented offensive playmakers, the Browns went 6-10. Mayfield completed 59.4% of his pass attempts for 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. His passer rating dropped by almost 15 points.
This offseason, Cleveland added more players to help their struggling quarterback. However, it’s obvious which member of this duo is in for a better season.
