NFL: Will Todd Gurley or the Rams’ RBs have a better 2020 season?

After five seasons, the Los Angeles Rams released former All-Pro running back Todd Gurley earlier this offseason. The 26-year-old signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons. Gurley plans on embarrassing the Rams this season by proving he’s still one of the best backs in the NFL.

With Gurley no longer on the roster, Los Angeles selected Florida State’s Cam Akers in the second-round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The rookie joins a roster that already features veteran Malcolm Brown and 2019 third-round pick Darrell Henderson. John Kelly, a sixth-round selection from 2018, could see more snaps this year.

Despite loading up their backfield in recent years, the Rams don’t have a single proven starting running back. Akers possesses star potential, but he hasn’t played in an NFL game yet. Brown is a quality depth piece at most, and neither Henderson nor Kelly played a meaningful role in Los Angeles’ offense over the past two years.

On the other side of this equation is a two-time First-Team All-Pro. Gurley earned the selections back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. Between those two seasons, he produced 3,924 yards from scrimmage and 40 total touchdowns. No running back was more productive during those two years.

Unfortunately, things began unraveling for Gurley in the playoffs. During the final two playoff games of Los Angeles’ run to Super Bowl LIII, Gurley only carried the ball 14 times. Between the Conference Championship game and the Super Bowl, Gurley produced 47 yards on 16 touches.

That offseason, Gurley’s trainer told CBS Sports that the All-Pro was dealing with an arthritic component in his knee. When the back performed poorly in 2019, rushing for 857 yards and only averaging 3.8 yards per carry, the Rams cut their losses.

However, Gurley could revive his career with the Falcons. There’s no guarantee that the Rams end up with a better situation at running back either. Instead, Gurley might outperform his old team’s entire backfield.
