Even after the NFL’s recent salary cap spike, the Dallas Cowboys are still a few million dollars over the cap. That means making any truly major moves in free agency will be tough for the club.
Of course, there are ways around the cap via releasing players, restructuring contracts, etc., but the fact of the matter is that the Cowboys are going to have a difficult time doling out big money.
That means Dallas may have to search the bargain bin for some potential free-agent steals this month, and Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon sees an intriguing target for the Cowboys in that category.
Indianapolis Colts running back Zack Moss.
Moss is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played 14 games and rushed for 794 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He also caught 27 passes for 192 yards and a couple of scores.
The 26-year-old showed starting potential while Jonathan Taylor was on the PUP list early in the year, as Moss was the Colts’ featured back for the first quarter of the season. He put together a couple of monster performances during that time, including a 165-yard, two-touchdown outing.
Once Taylor returned, Moss’ touches dipped significantly, but he may have done enough in the early stages of 2023 to earn himself a starting job somewhere else.
Perhaps the Cowboys can offer it to him?
Dallas will likely lose Tony Pollard to free agency, and a guy like Moss could be a great option for a Cowboys squad that doesn’t have a ton of money to spend.
Plus, running backs are getting less and less prominent these days. You no longer need a 1,000-yard back to succeed, so Moss could be a fine avenue to explore.
Moss, who played his collegiate football at the University of Utah, was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He spent two-and-a-half years with the Bills before being traded to Indianapolis in November 2022.
